About Us Overview
The mission of Turkish Women’s Initiative is to promote leadership, educational opportunities, economic independence and civic engagement of girls and women.
Our aim is to strengthen the potential of girls and woman to become active, responsible and productive members of their societies. In so doing, we are helping to advance a society’s growth and prosperity through the full contributions of its women.
When women develop leadership skills, believe in their own empowerment and demonstrate new expressions of courage and resilience, they serve as important role models for their families and communities.
TWI offers innovative, practical and sustainable leadership programs.

TRADITIONAL LEARNING METHODOLOGY
Learning models in both industrialized and developing societies have been (and in many areas continue to) emphasize expertise in reading, writing, mathematics, and science – with an emphasis on memorization and taking directions from superiors.
Even when it is covered, current leadership training is often short-term and relies principally on speakers, reading, and limited case studies.

TWI’S APPROACH
TWI programs provide skill-building learning experiences that are essential to today’s fast-moving global economy. Over a period of eight months, Sparks women practice the key skills of critical thinking, effective problem solving, collaborative teamwork, and honed interpersonal abilities to address real-life issues.
Working together in teams, they take on projects to improve social conditions with sensitivity to regional and socio-cultural differences. Read examples of Sparks projects.
Some Sparks participants stay with the program for two or three years, continually learning and growing in self-confidence and engagement with societal issues.
-
TWI’S TARGET PARTICIPANT:
TWI programs are focused on women and girls of modest means who often have been limited by socio-economic circumstance and familial and social constraints. Our goal is to equip them with the skills needed to be active participants in their communities and in the workforce. We do this by offering important alternative ways to learn, gain self-confidence, and reach their potential.
-
SELF EMPOWERMENT:
When women believe in their own self-worth and power, they grow in confidence to take on projects of their own in their professions, their communities, and beyond. They can serve as important role models for others by demonstrating new expressions of courage and resilience.
Program participants grow in confidence and skills by teaming to initiate community action, which includes working “from the ground up” with program facilitators and with formal and informal community leaders.
